Super Modern Ultra Efficient (and crappy)

Gill bought me some Geo F. Trumpers shaving soap over a year ago … and I’m still using it. Compare that to your typical crappy can of Gillette Shaving Gel that is just as expensive, last a couple months, and is bad for the environment (aerosols, metal/plastic can, etc).

Instead, my little wooden bowl of soap from Mr. Trumpers is completely bio-degradable and, if I do say so myself, looks pretty cool.

I think there’s a lot to be said for products that last a little longer, are a little more environmentally friendly, and maybe don’t work quite as well as their super-modern-ultra-efficient counterparts.

Old fashion, FTW.

By the way, feel free to read more about me.

  1. You shave with a straight razor? How long does that take in the mornings? I can't imagine it's something you'd do when half asleep…

  2. My first shaving set was actually about the same. My mom thought it was old junk from my grandfather and threw it out.
It was the best I've ever used though.

  3. There’s a lot to be said in favor of Trumper’s products. They do require a few changes in shaving techniques to reach an optimal result, but I find their effect to be generally superior to that of “modern” brands indeed.

For example, have you tried their Skin Food? It’s a combo pre- and after- shave that is as special as it is strange.

On a side note, do cross the street once in a while — quite literally — the next time you are in London, and investigate D.R. Harris. They’re a competitor of Trumper’s and offer very complementary products. I find what one brand does only moderately well the other excels at, and vice-versa.

  4. I've used a double edge safety razor, brush, and a similar shaving cream (Taylor of Old Bond St, I believe) for a couple of years. It's a much, much better shave than the new stuff.

  5. No, I don't use a straight razor – just the old fashion soap :)

  6. I've been shaving with a Trumper's razor for a while now and I love it!
